Laser therapy clinics

We’re delighted to offer a new low level laser therapy service for pets at 387 Vets. Laser therapy is a brilliant way to to speed up rehabilitative care, to support pain management and to help relieve symptoms in a whole range of pet health issues to improve your pet’s wellbeing. Treatment is very pet-friendly: it’s non-invasive, silent, quick, cost-effective and drug free and is suitable for all pets.

Some of the conditions laser therapy can help:

Fractures and post-surgical healing, arthritis and other joint problems, hard-to-heal wounds, chronic pain, inflammatory conditions (e.g. lick granuloma, gingivitis, soft tissue injuries, tendon/ muscle damage), lymphatic blockage, infection.

See our Facilities page for a brief description of how laser works.

We recommend an initial course of 4 sessions. The length of session will depend on the condition being treated.

Please do get in touch if you feel laser therapy could help improve your pet’s quality of life.

Case Study: Baxter’s effective pain relief without prescription medication

Baxter has been coming to 387 Vets since October 2018 for acupuncture as his owner was really keen for find a pain management solution for Baxter’s arthritis that didn’t involve long term medication. Acupuncture managed Baxter’s pain successfully, with a significant drop in Baxter’s pain score after his first series of treatment, and combined with weight loss, Baxter’s gait became much lighter and his mobility much improved. When our acupuncture vet Carole moved to Nottingham, Baxter’s owner was keen to continue with complementary therapy for pain management and started Baxter on laser treatment at 387 Vets.

Results have been really positive. Baxter’s owner noticed Baxter was really bouncy straight after his first treatment and remained really good on his legs right up until the next laser session. With acupuncture, Baxter had been quiet and tired for a couple of days before exhibiting similar light-footedness.

Baxter had a break from complementary therapy during May while his owner was away, and by the end of the month his gait had returned to  being plodding and heavy. With a session of acupuncture from Carole before she moved to her new job, and just one session of laser, Baxter showed much more even weight distribution when walking, better mobility and was out and about and enjoying his walks!

Baxter remains off prescription medication and is happy, alert and active. Having seen such positive results, Baxter’s owner says he will definitely be continuing with laser therapy to support Baxter’s mobility and quality of life.

Case Study: Katie’s mobility significantly improved

Katie a 12 year old collie cross spaniel could hardly bear any weight on her left foreleg when she first started laser therapy; she was already on pain relief and joint mobility supplements for arthritis. Katie’s owner signed her up for laser therapy on both elbows as Katie was showing signs of discomfort in her other leg too.

Even after Katie’s first laser therapy session, her owner noticed a small positive change in mobility.

After completing a full course of four treatments, Katie’s owner noted she could do things she wouldn’t have done before, such as jumping on and off the bed and in and out of the car and going for a decent walk without it being painful.

Katie’s owner was delighted with such a positive outcome. She had been really worried that if Katie had shown no signs of improvement she might have had to have Katie put to sleep

Katie continues to attend regular laser therapy sessions to help maintain her increased mobility.

Case study: Reggie’s lameness gone

Reggie was recommended laser therapy for lameness after restricted exercise and pain relief had not resolved his issue. Reggie completed 4 sessions of laser therapy, and no longer has any lameness.

“It’s worked. I would throughly recommend it!” – Reggie’s mum

The weight clinics have been a great help: they have offered fantastic dietary advice for my dog. My dog now has more energy and is losing weight steadily. A great service with friendly supportive advice.” Mrs Redfern on cavalier Charlie who has lost 2.3kg

“Since changing her food to the Royal Canin … she is a lot more active and seems to be fuller for longer … Millie also now sleeps less and ventures out for longer.” Mrs Haddock on cat Mille who has lost 1.3kg and is now at her ideal body condition score.

“As the weight came down, we saw dramatic changes to his activity levels. He seemed more settled during mealtimes and started to take himself outside on a regular basis. He can now jump and climb freely again and has started to regain his natural instincts for play as a skilled hunter.” Mrs Forth on cat Monty who gained weight during recuperation from a road traffic accident. Monty was at the top end of our body condition scoring scale, but since attending weight clinics he has lost 2.3kg to reach his target weight.

“Since Patch has started dieting and exercising he has a lot more energy. He can also get up from a lying down position easier and get up and down the stairs better. His dog walker has said he is getting faster everyday. He still has a long way to go but thanks to the help of the vets we are heading in the right direction.” Mrs Foster on collie Patch who has lost 5kg of his 12kg target since embarking on the weight clinics in September.

Pain Clinics

Our pain management clinics are available to any pet suffering with general or localised stiffness (including arthritis, hip or elbow dysplasia, reduced joint or limb mobility post surgery or muscle trauma) to help increase mobility, improve quality of life and relieve pain.

Following a lifestyle analysis to assess what hurts and how we can help, we’ll discuss strategies for making your pet more comfortable at home and how to improve interaction for more play and more fun! You’ll learn how to identify signs of pain, and we’ll teach you basic massage and physiotherapy techniques you can carry out regularly at home to improve your pet’s mobility. We’ll work alongside any current medical management and vet recommendations and design a tailored programme to suit the specific needs of your pet. And we’ll see your pet at regular intervals to assess progress and adapt your pet’s exercises as their mobility improves.

Parasite Prevention Clinics

No one wants their pets to be plagued by parasites!

Fleas, ticks and worms can all carry disease and make our pets poorly. Flea allergy dermatitis is the most common disease seen in dogs and cats*, where pets develop hypersensitivity to flea saliva. Many of us will have heard of Lyme Disease contracted by being bitten by infected ticks, and different worms can cause health issues for our pets, some more serious than others. Lung worm, for example, can be fatal to dogs.

It’s not just our pets that are at health risk if we don’t protect against parasites, but us too!

Book in to one of our nurse-led parasite clinics to discuss the best protection for your pet and their lifestyle. As well as keeping your furry friend healthy, you’ll be keeping yourself safe and your home infestation-free.

Senior Pet Clinics – for cats and dogs over 8 years old

There are lots of age-related illnesses and conditions we can be unaware of in our pets until disease has really progressed, such as kidney, heart and thyroid disease as well as diabetes. And arthritis is now the most common disease seen in veterinary practice: over 20% of dogs over 8 have the condition, and over 90% of cats over the age of 12.

Why are Senior Pet Clinics recommended?

Animals can be very good at hiding chronic (i.e. low level, long term) pain. But spotting common age-related conditions early can avoid untold distress, and help us to manage underlying conditions successfully. Our senior pet clinics are designed to do just that.

What does a Senior Pet Clinic involve?

Step 1:

You and your pet will have an initial appointment with one of our qualified veterinary nurses to talk through a health and lifestyle checklist and discuss any concerns.

Step 2:

We’ll admit your pet for the morning for:

  • A health examination with a vet including a dental health check
  • Mobility scoring for arthritis
  • Urine testing (checking urine concentration for kidney function; a diabetes screen; checking blood protein levels)
  • Blood pressure monitoring (cats only)
  • Eye pressure testing for glaucoma (dogs only), using our Tonovet®

Step 3:

We’ll discuss results from your pet’s health screen at your discharge appointment with a vet or fully qualified veterinary nurse.

Step 4:

We’ll advise on any revisits or further courses of action, and give you supportive advice on keeping your pet active, healthy and fitHow much is the Senior Pet Clinic?
